Turned out the problem was not the original sensor, but a stuck oil control valve, which is not an uncommon problem on the 2007 Sonata v6, for which there is a service bulletin. That valve caused some other parts to require replacement.

However, eliminating this sensor as a cause helped home in on the real cause and convincing the dealer to cover the repair work under my 10 year 100K mile warranty. So, now I have a spare sensor that I will probably never need in case anyone is interested. My highway mpg (1 40 mile test trip) is now as advertised by Hyundai, 30 mpg. However, my city (suburban) mileage is a lousy 13.8 mpg, nowhere near Hyundai's advertised 20 mpg.
