Recon 26415X LED Tailgate Bar Review

Before I purchased the Recon 26415X Led light Bar I purchased an LEDGlow also through Amazon. Fortunately before permanently installing it, I plugged into the truck and found one of the LED segments did not work and further, it was very dim during the day. You could hardly see any of the functions. I sent it back and got a refund (still had to eat the ten bucks for return shipping, but at least I wasn't stuck with it).
I then purchased the Recon 49" and installed it on a 2011 Toyota double Cab. It looks great and the LEDs are bright and visible even during the day. The Recon has larger LEDs than the LEDGlow and they have also incorporated a magnifying lens that enhances the light intensity.

The first thing you need to do to make life easier is to dry fit the bar under the tailgate to make sure you have the clearance for the bar. Once you have decided the thing will fit and whether or not you need to make any modifications, take the tailgate off. You'll be glad you did. Make sure you check to see if there is clearance when the tailgate is open.

I had to make a few modifications in both the truck and the light bar. The bar had to be installed at the level of the top of the bumper because the spare tire crank hole in right in the middle of the space under the tailgate. I had to cut a notch in the Recon at the crank hole and also where the back-up camera wire comes out of the box. To insure enough room for the crank to go in I used an electrical knock -out punch to enlarge the crank hole, otherwise, there still would not have been enough space for the crank to go in even after cutting the notch in the Recon. The space under the tail gate is small enough and recessed enough so you don't see the modifications made. The 3M tape that holds the Recon to the truck seems to hold really well. You can use screws if you don't trust the tape, but I didn't. We'll see what the North Carolina summer does to it.

The wiring was fairly simple, but a nodding acquaintance with electricity and automotive electricity can be helpful. The turn signals, running lights, and brake lights all work from a four pin trailer connection. The back-up lights require wiring into the hot side of the vehicle back-up lights. You can easily tap the circuit behind the left rear tail light. I had already had a relay installed to operate two fog lights that I have installed under the trailer receiver that come on as back-up lights, so I tapped into that circuit. The red wire on the Recon Bar needs to be hooked on a constant 12 volt hot wire. If you want the light bar to work like your tail light and brake light, i.e. without the ignition on, you will have to run a wire from a constant hot from your fuse block. Even if you cut into the + pin on your 7 pin trailer your bar will only work with the ignition on.

The whole install took me about two hours with all the modification and running the hot wire from the front of the truck. It works just as advertised and looks great especially at night. I would recommend this one even if it is more expensive than some others out there.
