Optilux H71010371 55-Watt Driving Light Kit Review
Upon receiving the Optilux's I was initially surprised at their heft and solidity, given their low price. the lenses are solid glass and the mountings are all coated in shiny, black paint which looks quite durable, The lights are specifically designed to hang upside-down in the car's lower grill, and attach with a squared, "C"-shaped bracket with two mounting holes. As I have a '06 Mini Cooper S, and wanted to mount the lights up higher, against the upper hood grill, this was a problem, as the mounts I was planning on using only had a single mounting hole. In the end, I had custom brackets fabricated with a single mounting hole. The lights cannot be flipped in the stock brackets, so if you plan to mount them upright (as opposed to hanging down) then they will, in effect, be "upside down". So far, this has not affected their performance, however, and they look just fine. I do wish that Hella had designed the lights to be used either upright or hanging down, and that they had included a second bracket with a single mounting hole for users that plan to install them with single-point brackets, though.
BE ADVISED that the lights come with all of the hardware required EXCEPT for the screws or bolts you will need to attach these to your front fender or light bar. Seeing as how the lights are so inexpensive, I don't begrudge Hella the $5 in stainless steel bolts and Nylock nuts I had to purchase, but it would have been nice if they had included them in the package.
The Hellas were easy to install and all of the electrical connections are very beefy, with deep silicone protectors to keep moisture away from the connections. The installation instructions are a bit sparse, however Hella offers free help via phone, and the questions I had were answered by a very polite and knowledgeable technician. The included switch is small and unobtrusive, and should look fine in any car or truck. I would have preferred that the switch illuminate, so that it was easier to see at night, but for the price I wasn't expecting all that much - if this really bothers you, replacement switches can be found at Radio Shack or any number of online retailers for just a few dollars.
Illumination from the main lights is very strong and really helps light up dark roads. The lights did not come with aiming instructions, however, another strange omission. The ring-lights are provided by two LEDS in each light, and are a dim, blue color. I wish the rings were a bit brighter, but again, given the Optilux's low price tag, I feel quite satisfied with what I got.
